Cleaning marble

Cleaning marble: how to (not) do it!

Marble is a high-quality natural stone that can be used in many areas: as wall cladding, in sculpture, as fireplace cladding, as marble flooring or in the bathroom. Find out here how to remove stains from the surface, how to create and maintain a shine and how to care for it properly.

Cleaning marble in everyday life

When cleaning your marble, you should Exercise cautionas this natural stone Acid-sensitive is. You should therefore ensure that you use an appropriate cleaning agent.

These include:

  • Neutral cleaner
  • Water + pH-neutral washing-up liquid
  • Stone care
  • Basic cleaner (pay attention to the pH value here too!)

You only need to use these for coarser soiling, such as oil stains, limescale or wax. Otherwise, cleaning with
Sweeping (soft broom) or else with a little (!) clear waterto remove light stains.

You should avoid these cleaners

Under no circumstances should you use the following cleaners for the care and cleaning of your marble floor, stairs or worktop:

  • Acidic cleaning agents (e.g. vinegar, fruit acids)
  • Scouring agent
  • Soft soap
  • Limescale cleaner

Cleaning agents of this kind can dull the natural stone & cause it to lose its shine, suffer chemical burns and lose its natural structure

What else you should avoid

In addition to the cleaners mentioned, there are also aids that you should avoid when cleaning and caring for them. These include Scouring pads. Due to their nature, these can also scratch the surface of the stone. This makes them extremely unsuitable for removing stains.

If you have a marble floor, you should also not clean it with a Vacuum cleaner clean. This can also cause scratches on the marble.

3 moments to clean marble

You should have your marble cleaned at three different times:

1. after laying

This is particularly relevant if you have a marble floor or a marble staircase.

After laying, the joints are filled. The floor can then be swept away and then cleaned become.

You can then apply an impregnation to the marble.

2. 1x per year

The so-called Basic cleaning is carried out once a year. This serves to thoroughly remove dirt and impurities. However, basic cleaning should also be carried out before renewing the impregnation.

After the already known sweeping, cleaners for natural stone that are diluted with water are suitable.

3. daily/weekly

The purpose of daily cleaning is to remove everyday dirt immediately. To do this, the floor, worktop & co. swept away.

Stains can also be wiped off immediately with a little water.

Apart from this, it makes sense to damp clean once a week.

Cleaning outdoor marble

There are only a few types of marble that are suitable for outdoor use, as marble is not frost-resistant.

However, if it is laid outdoors, it is exposed to particular environmental influences:

  • Rain
  • Frost
  • Foliage
  • Overgrowth with weeds or moss
  • Soiling and scratches caused by animals (such as birds)

You should clean the marble floor regularly Sweeping and remove leaves, weeds etc. We recommend wet cleaning once a week. However, be careful not to use too much water here either.

If there are rust stains, for example, basic cleaners are often suitable, but sometimes special products are needed.

Tip: Although high-pressure cleaners clean quickly and easily, they are unsuitable for marble. The powerful jet attacks the natural stone - and you achieve what you don't want to achieve: the floor becomes more susceptible to dirt.

Clean, care, protect - with impregnation

Impregnation offers your natural stone the following benefits from the outset additional protection against the penetration of liquids, dirt, etc. So you don't have to worry about every stain.

You can order this impregnation when you purchase the marble or apply it yourself. It is then applied with a brush.

It is advisable to renew the impregnation approximately every four years (depending on the water absorption of the material).

New shine for dull marble

Are your marble floor or stairs dull? Has the stone become "blind"? Then it's time to have it grinding and polishing.

This task is best left to a professional. Polishing with a professional polishing set for marble is also fine.

But one thing is particularly important: Never polish your natural stone with household products (toothpaste, sunflower oil, baking powder, etc.). As the stone is so sensitive, you will do it more harm than good.
